Jan Norman is an artist who works in watercolour and mixed media.

Jan Writes:

"Painting is something I have enjoyed since childhood.

I began to paint seriously with oils and various other mediums, including etching at college.

Subsequently, watercolour has captured my imagination. It has a variability about it that encourages experimentation. It is a difficult medium and can be very unforgiving, but it has a quality that I love. It has transparency and luminosity. Paint runs or spreads swiftly sometimes unpredictably which is largely responsible for those ethereal and mystical qualities, qualities that creative artists find so appealing.

I paint intuitively. The subject matter is mainly landscapes. My paintings are not true copies of nature – they are generally inspired by a view or place, but the colours change and the image evolves into what makes a good picture. I like to paint loosely and sometimes wet in wet, adding inks, wax, pencils and whatever makes appropriate marks to complete the image."

In 1997 Jan attained a certificate in fine art at the University of Brighton.

In 2010 elected to membership of The Sussex Watercolour Society.
